Are you trying to create a dining room where you can entertain in comfort and simple luxury, but without all the fuss and fanfare? With clean lines, beautiful details, understated elegance, and more than a touch of drama, the Sophia is the dining room for you.
1. First, imagine your room wrapped in a rich mahogany paint color. Now, in the center, place this 60" round table, featuring a beautiful inlay of cherry veneers over select hardwoods, seating 6-8 with ease, and whose curved lines speak of elegance and glamor.
2. The host chairs mimic the table's curved shape, while the tufted back provides unexpected comfort, and gorgeous detailing in the nailheads which frame the unusual shape of the back.
3. The side chairs give equal comfort, but with a more simplified appearance, the shape of the leg speaking beautifully to the curves in the base of the table. All of the chairs are dressed in a sharp, off-white twill, providing dramatic contrast. Although the legs of the side chairs appear a different color in the layout above, all the chairs will have a rich walnut finish, relating again to the warm, dark wood of the table.
4. Anchoring the arrangement, providing weight and fluidity, is the hand-tufted, 100% wool area rug, in shades of deep chocolate and warm mocha. The rug may be purchased round or rectangular, though I would strongly recommend the round, both for interest, as well as to continue the rhythm of the space.
5. Above, suspended like fine jewlery and modern art in one, is a gorgeous 26" chandelier in a richly textured bronze finish, highlighted by faceted bronze mirrored-glass jewels and teastained cream glass to wash your space in a warm, intimate light.
6. Along one wall, the elegant 3-drawer console provides a space for serving food or beverages, with the pair of classic, sepia botanical photos hung side by side above it. When not in use for serving, 3 of the large, crystal, lotus-shaped votive holders (seen in the lower left corner) stand in a graceful line on its surface. These move beautifully to the dining table, one placed every other chair, when entertaining.
7. On your secondary wall, creating both a focal point and conversation piece, is the oversized, gallery-wrapped canvas reproduction of a 19th century French deed. The subject gives the room a sense of age and history, while the large proportions (40"w x 60"h) increase the room's dramatic statement.
8. Frame your windows and doorway in tobacco-colored damask panels, with a creamy natural background. The unlined panels provide a lightness and airiness against the deeply colored walls and dark furniture, drawing the eye up the vertical line to make the room feel taller. An abundance of fabric also gives a room a singular coziness, and sense of depth and intimacy.
9. Finally, keep the table's centerpiece simple and dramatic with a large arrangement of white tulips in a crystal vase. The tulips' shape and color are graphic and dramatic against the dark wood of the table, the relate back to the light colors in the chairs, the matting on the photos, and the background of the draperies, tying the entire space together, right at its center.
